Although there are many varying factors among golf courses, the average golf course is 160 acres in size. This acreage includes amenities such as a clubhouse and practice areas, and can range from 120 acres to 200 acres. That’s between 5,000 to 7,000 yards.
Note that executive golf courses – which typically contain mostly par 3’s – will be closer to an average of 90 acres, and range from 75 to 110 acres.
There are many different factors that can influence how many acres a golf course has, which we’ll dive in to below.
Acres In a Golf Course By Area Type
Golf courses are made up of several different terrain types and play areas. Let’s take a look at how this is spread across a 110-acre golf course:
-Fairways make up about 27% of a golf course (or 32 acres)
-Rough areas make up about 60% of a golf course (or 65 acres)
-Driving ranges make up 6% of a golf course (or 7 acres)
-Tees and greens make up about 5% of a golf course (or 6 acres)
-Amenities like clubhouses make up the remaining 2% of a golf course (or 1.8 acres)
Other Factors That Affect How Many Acres Are In A Golf Course
Resort Golf Courses versus Urban Golf Courses
Golf courses in a resort setting will typically have a higher number and larger-sized hazards like bodies of water, bunkers, and out-of-play areas, as well as doglegs and even additional buildings or structures on them. This can push the typical resort golf club to cover 170 to 190 acres.
Golf courses in an urban setting will have less of the above, resulting in an acreage of around 110 to 120 acres.
