The design of a camping kettle is pretty straightforward, with one main purpose in mind – boiling water quickly.
However, when you are looking for outdoor products like this there’s more than just function that matters!
Here are a few key considerations to keep in mind when choosing a kettle for camping:
Kettle Design & Dimensions
Camping kettles can be thin and long, or short and round.
The shape depends on whether it’s to be used over an open flame like a campfire, or with a specific brand of camping stove like a JetBoil for instance.
Consider the shape and design and what your intended use is when picking yours out.
Camping Kettle Materials
Kettles can be made from a few different types of materials:
Anodized aluminum is the material of choice for makers who want a durable, long-lasting kettle. It can withstand unpredictable campfire temperatures and open flames, and won’t corrode easily.
Stainless steel is a great material for kettles, but it weighs more than aluminum and stains faster when used over open flames.
Cast iron is extremely durable and can last years with proper care, but is very heavy. Cast iron is great for cooking on a campfire or even on coals, and is best used if you are car camping or only hauling your camping gear a short distance to your campsite.
Titanium is the lightest metal, but it’s inability to heat evenly can cause problems. It has an overall weight that is much lighter than steel or aluminum- however because of its thinness these materials offer less durability and efficiency.
Silicone is good at conducting heat evenly and is super lightweight and affordable, and is used for most models of collapsible camping kettles.
Silicone cannot be used over an open flame though, making it less versatile.
Kettle Capacity
Most camping kettles hold about 1 liter or 33 ounces of water, which is enough to make a pot of coffee or tea for 1-2 people.
A 1.5-2 liter kettle will serve groups of 4 adequately.
If your family or group is larger than that, you’ll want to pay attention to how much liquid your kettle will hold and go for a bigger one.
Handle Material
Silicone handles are the most common as they don’t melt very easily.
Nylon handles are popular too, but they melt at a lower temperature than silicone.
Lip And Spout Design
Make sure the kettle you choose has a secure-fitting lid and also has steam outlets to prevent the kettle from blowing open when liquid starts boiling inside of it.
The kettle’s spout should be easy to pour out of without spilling anything, but short enough to not get in the way when packed up.
Weight
If you’ll be hiking a fair distance to your campsite or if you are backpacking, then the lighter your kettle is, the better.
Avoid stainless steel kettles in this situation and lean toward titanium if possible to reduce the weight.

Kettles work best when they have a slow and steady source of heat.
